● PREMIERE PRO + AFTER EFFECTS

Dynamic Link composition could not be rendered? Isolate the link first.

The message points to an After Effects composition used by Premiere Pro, but it does not prove whether the problem is the link, the source project, one layer, or the composition’s processing load.

Run one short comparison before rebuilding the link

Duplicate the sequence, export 5 to 10 seconds around the failing timecode with the same preset, then disable only the linked After Effects clip that overlaps that range and repeat the identical export.

If the baseline fails and the disabled-clip comparison succeeds, the Dynamic Link path or that composition becomes a stronger lead. It still does not identify the final layer, effect, font, plug-in, or media file responsible.

What the message actually tells you

“Dynamic Link composition could not be rendered” identifies the stage that did not return a usable rendered result to Premiere Pro. It does not prove that the After Effects project is corrupt or that every linked composition must be replaced.

Preserve the exact wording, the Premiere Pro and After Effects versions, the export preset, and any reported timecode before changing the project. If the dialog is incomplete, the Adobe Media Encoder error log may preserve an additional component or timecode clue.

Check the Adobe version pair

Adobe states that Dynamic Link requires matching major versions of Premiere Pro and After Effects. Record both version numbers. If their major versions differ, align that pair before testing unrelated project changes.

A matching version pair does not prove that the link is healthy. It only removes one documented incompatibility from the test.

Confirm that the source composition is still available

A linked composition can appear offline when its After Effects project was moved, renamed, or deleted. Adobe’s current workflow is to select the offline composition in the Project panel, choose Link Media, and select the original .aep file.

Relink only when Premiere actually shows the item as offline or the source path is no longer valid. Relinking a healthy composition adds a new variable without testing the export failure.

Interpret the controlled result

RESULT 01

Disabling the linked clip changes the result

The composition or its handoff to Premiere deserves priority. Open that composition in After Effects and test one suspect at a time.

RESULT 02

The export still fails

The linked clip was not sufficient to explain this range. Restore it and follow the strongest remaining message, frame, media, or GPU clue.

RESULT 03

The linked composition is offline

Restore its source path first, then repeat the same short baseline before changing effects or export settings.

If the composition is linked but too heavy to return frames reliably

Adobe documents three ways to reduce Dynamic Link processing delays: take the composition offline temporarily, disable the linked clip, or use Clip > Render and Replace. For export diagnosis, disabling one clip is the cleanest first comparison because it is easy to reverse.

If that test implicates the composition, render and replace only the affected item in the duplicate sequence. A successful export then supports the hypothesis that the live Dynamic Link path mattered; it does not prove which internal After Effects element caused the original failure.

How Export Doctor fits

Export Doctor is a read-only diagnostic assistant for Adobe Premiere Pro 25.6 and later on Windows and macOS. It can use the error text and timeline evidence to prioritize a Dynamic Link composition worth testing. It does not modify the After Effects project, render a replacement automatically, or guarantee one root cause.

Frequently asked questions

Does this message prove that After Effects is broken?

No. It identifies the linked-composition path, not one final cause. Compare the same short range with one linked clip disabled.

Do Premiere Pro and After Effects need matching versions?

Adobe says the two applications must use the same major version for Dynamic Link.

Should I replace every linked composition?

No. Isolate the item overlapping the failing range first, then test or render and replace only that suspect in a duplicate sequence.

Limits and sources

Adobe documents how Dynamic Link works, its version requirement, relinking, and render-and-replace options. Adobe does not publish a universal mapping from this error message to one guaranteed repair.
